It’s a brand new year and with it the age-old resolution to get fit.
Instead of buying a gym membership, consider setting up your own home gym.
But before you dive headfirst into buying a shiny new treadmill or resistance bands, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) has some suggestions for your investment.
Regardless of your age, the first thing BBB recommends to successfully build your exercise room is to check with your doctor to make sure your resolution is actually healthy for you.
“Also, set your fitness goals and figure out what type of equipment you need to reach those goals, then check your home to make sure you have enough space to set up,” said Better Business Bureau President and CEO Michele Mason.
Mason says that once you have a plan and know what you want to buy, visit the business in person to test out the equipment.
You want to find exercise equipment that you will use for a long time and that also fits into your long-term budget.
“We always recommend that you use your credit card for the purchase so that if there is a problem, you can make sure you can work with your financial institution or business,” Mason said.
Getting in shape can be dangerous if you don’t know how your new equipment works. Mason encourages people to understand all the safety features that come with your purchase.
He also advises everyone to be aware of any hidden fees or subscriptions that are commonly found with stationary bikes or treadmills.
“Some companies will also offer them as a free intro, but that could end up happening, you want to make sure you understand what the costs would be and whether you have the right to cancel before you start getting charged,” Mason said. . “You also want to make sure you understand the refund policy the company offers, as well as what they will do if you have any safety concerns with the product.”
With a little planning and smart shopping, you’ll be on your way to a healthier, stronger you in 2025.
