Greenspace Dallas

For those trying to volunteer for the first time and don’t know where to start, Greenspace Dallas, a non-profit organization that restores and improves urban green spaces in the Trinity River Corridor, might be a good place to start.

Greenspace Dallas offers an opportunity to clean up trash along the river every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers can bring their children and dogs. The crew meets at different locations every week. Volunteers are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for outdoor activities and to bring water.

Trinity River Audubon Center

Trinity River Audubon Center, bird and wildlife sanctuary in Dallas, offers one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities. For those looking for a one-time opportunity to help, extra hands are needed most Saturdays from 8am to 2pm to focus on habitat restoration in the centre. Part of the work is aimed at helping ecosystems by cleaning and widening existing trails, removing invasive species or restoring prairie, forest and wetland habitats. Projects vary monthly.

Cedar Ridge Preserve

Cedar Ridge Reservationabout 15 miles from downtown Dallas, is a 600-acre natural site with nine miles of hiking trails and views from atop a limestone escarpment. Every third Saturday of the month, she is looking for volunteers to remove non-native plants, restore trails and work in the butterfly garden.

The organizers provide refreshments, pruning shears, shovels and work gloves. Volunteers are encouraged to bring water, sunscreen and bug repellant.

Bonton Farms

Bonton Farms is a non-profit organization that works with the people of Bonton to transform and create sustainable solutions for their community. Volunteers are needed for farm restoration and household chores such as milking goats, harvesting plants and raising chickens.

Volunteer slots are available Tuesday through Friday and the second Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. This opportunity is suitable for families, but under 16s need adult supervision.

The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden seeks volunteers throughout the year for a variety of activities such as garden guides, kindergarten volunteers, streetcar drivers, gift shop volunteers, and information booth volunteers.
